How the Grinch Stole Christmas – Prototype “Whoville Baker” Shirt - H4-13
A charming preproduction “Whoville Baker” shirt created by the costume department during the design development of Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). This original cream-colored baker’s style shirt features the distinctive Seussian flair that defined the film’s wardrobe, including decorative red button accents and a festive holly leaf and berry embellishment at the collar. Crafted in the whimsical, over-the-top aesthetic of Whoville, this prototype piece was made as part of the costume design exploration process, as the team refined the look and personality of Whoville’s many eccentric townsfolk. Each Whoville costume was uniquely tailored to the film’s colorful world, combining holiday cheer with Dr. Seuss’s playful shapes and textures. Pieces like this exemplify the high level of craftsmanship and creative experimentation that contributed to the film’s Academy Award® for Best Makeup and its celebrated production design. A wonderful behind-the-scenes artifact from the creation of one of the most visually imaginative Christmas films ever made.
