Universal Studios Hollywood "Back to the Future: The Ride" - Employee Operations Manual - 65-46 - IC
This original Universal Studios Hollywood Operations Manual was issued for use by an employee working on the legendary Back to the Future: The Ride attraction. The spiral-bound manual is identified throughout as "Universal Studios Hollywood - Back to the Future... The Ride - Operations Manual" and is marked Version 2, March 1998. Created as an internal working document for attraction personnel, the manual provides an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the procedures involved in operating one of Universal Studios' most memorable attractions. Its contents include employee policies and procedures, identification cards and probationary periods, daily ride-operator responsibilities, wardrobe and appearance standards, lost-and-found procedures, attraction specifications, queue-control procedures, operating positions, evacuation procedures, diagrams and other detailed operational information. Among the particularly interesting sections is "Your Day as a Ride Operator," which walks employees through their daily routine from arriving for work and obtaining their time card and wardrobe through checking in with their lead, reviewing daily information, breaks and dismissal. Other pages provide detailed attraction specifications and operational information, including diagrams of the attraction's queue and descriptions of individual employee operating positions. The manual also contains illustrated divider pages for sections such as "Operating Positions" and "Evacuation Procedures." Handwritten employee notations can be seen on at least one page, further reflecting the manual's actual working use rather than being an unused or souvenir copy. The front cover features vintage Back to the Future: The Ride artwork and the title "Operations Manual." It remains housed in its original black-backed, plastic-comb binding. The manual exhibits expected signs of production/employee use and age, including handling wear, discoloration and wear to the cover and pages. Back to the Future: The Ride was one of Universal Studios' signature attractions and placed guests aboard an eight-passenger DeLorean time machine for a pursuit of Biff Tannen through time. The Hollywood version of the attraction operated for many years before eventually being retired, making original employee materials from the ride an increasingly interesting piece of Universal Studios and Back to the Future history. Unlike commercially produced park souvenirs, this manual was intended specifically for the Universal Studios personnel responsible for the day-to-day operation and safety of the attraction, providing a fascinating look behind the scenes at how Back to the Future: The Ride was actually operated. An outstanding original Universal Studios Hollywood employee artifact from one of the most celebrated theme-park attractions of its era and an exceptional piece of Back to the Future history.
